Science - Balance and Motion

This past week we had another science unit - Balance and Motion.  We got to travel to the other classrooms to learn about how things spin, roll and balance.  Here is a picture of what we did in 2HR.  We used wheels and axles to make rollers.  We discovered how to make rollers curve, how a real lawnmower works and we raced different designs down our ramps.  It was fun!

Achievement Fair Kiddos

These hardworking kids represented 2HR at the Brimhall Achievement Fair today!  Their projects were amazing.  They taught us about germination of seeds, cheetahs, racoons, three famous queens, batteries and the history of football.

Thursday, January 15 was the K-2 Brimhall Pajama-Rama Event - it was a blast.
We had over 500 people at our school. We got to eat dinner, make guesses at the raffle table and visit the other 2nd grade classrooms where we did fun activities.  In 2HR we did Go Noodles.  Go Noodles is a web-based "brain break" activity.  We got to dance, follow rhythmic moves and burn up energy!

Here were the first visitors of the night.
They started us off with lots of singing and dancing!

Our next set of friends helped to continue the fun...

Even more kids came to join in...

                                                          They really got moving...!

Even some Moms, Dads and Grandmas danced!

And of course kids had to check out some of the other fun things in the classroom.

We danced and jumped around so much that we blew the speaker
on the smartboard - oh, oh....

After the classroom fun, we met up with all of the other kids to sing a song together.
It was lead by Ms. Tyer.

Then we sang the song in front of all of the parents.  It sounded pretty good!

And here are the parents.  The cafeteria was packed!
Thanks to everyone who joined us.
It was a great night at Brimhall!

A special CONGRATULATIONS to Natalie, Akiza and Norah.
Natalie guessed at how many starburst were in the jar.
Her guess was the closest - she won!!
Then, Akiza and Norah each had their name drawn at the raffle.
They both get to pick out a book at the next Book Fair!

Thursday, January 15 - a great day at school!  We have been rotating classrooms for science.  Would you believe we can balance a pencil on a popsicle stick at it's point??  We did it!  The counterweights really helped.

And we're learning about magnets.  Here are some some fun ones that we get to build with.  Ask any of the kids which two metals won't stick to a magnet - they know!

This month our Author Study is all about Kate DiCamillo and here she is in the newspaper - cool!

This is where we can get creative.  It's our "mini theatre area."  When we're back here we can choose a background then create characters to be in a play.  Once we make our characters, we attach them to a paper clip. We have magnets glued to sticks that we put under the stage.  The magnets attract the paperclips from under the stage.  When we move the stick, our character moves.  It's been fun to try!

And who says we ever need to take a break from learning?  In 2HR, we are reading and thinking even in the bathroom.  Since one of our guided reading groups is learning about the rainforest, Mrs. Hinderer thought everyone should learn the same good information so she turned our bathroom into The Great Kapok Tree.  It has the four layers of the rainforest, leaves, animals and even a huge, hairy tarantula!
