Mowing

A couple of weeks ago we planted grass seed.  Along with the grass seed, we also planted a few alfalfa seeds in our cups.  The grass was finally ready to "mow" on Friday.  We will see if the alfalfa grows back with the grass.

This grass has been growning in Mrs. Anderson's classroom.  Her room gets the afternoon sun and this grass is much greener and thicker than the grass that is growing in our room (which gets the morning sun).

Field Trip to Como Conservatory
April 22, 2015
Today our class went on a field trip to the Como Zoo Conservatory.  We took a class called "Plants that Care."  We learned that plants take care of us by providing oxygen, food, shelter and even clothing.  Did you know that a dollar bill has cotton in it?  It's true!  That's why a bill doesn't get ruined when it goes through the wash.

We also got to make scented bath soap, we went on a scavenger hunt and we saw cool animals that live in the Conservatory (an anaconda snake, a HUGE tarantula and a sloth to name a few).  We also enjoyed watching the koi fish - there were hundreds of them!  It was an interesting and enjoyable morning at Como.

"Plants that Care" Class
Here we are with Jessie.  She taught us about specific uses for special plants.  While we were at the front table with her we learned about plants that are turned into medicines and we got to see the tree that produces the bean that chocolate comes from (a cocoa).  Then we moved to the back tables where we made bath salts.  Some of us scented our salt with eucalyptus while other chose lavender or peppermint.  The last activity we did with Jessie was a game where we review facts and learned new ones.  Our class did a great job!

Plant Flipbooks

This week we have been learning about the parts of plants and what each part does.  We showed our learning by making flip books.  We also talked about quality work and taking our time.

Not only are we learning about the parts of plants, but also the needs of plants as well:
1. Water
2. Soil
3. Space
4. Light
5. Air

Check out this catchy video to learn about the needs of plants:

Sideways Stories...

We have been reading Sideways Stories from Wayside School in class.  This book is downright hilarious!  The kids love it so much some of them checked out more Wayside School books from the library!  This would be a great book to read a loud to your kids before bed.
